Last night M4 played a classic Spanish Civil War engagement in 15mm using Mexicanski ’36. Nationalist forces staged an all-out assault on the Republican defense lines at Madrid’s University City and Model Prison. The Spanish Foreign Legion and Moors recklessly advanced under fire and fought tenacious hand-to-hand battles against Republican militia and International Brigade regulars holding the Republican front line. The Republican efforts were hampered by political infighting, as a badly needed battalion of Communist regulars was paraded in front of the press corps rather than being rushed to the front. Bueneventura Durutti’s anarchist volunteers also traded potshots with Communist hardliners as they moved into position. The Republican Air Force delivered punishing bombardment as Soviet-manufactured SB-2s hammered an advancing armored column until heavy fog set in, ending aerial warfare and severely limiting visibility on the ground.
In the end, the Nationalists managed to take both the university and the prison, despite suffering grievous casualties and the loss of all their tanks. The Republicans struggled fiercely to contain further advances and held on to the majority of the city. The game was judged to be a Nationalist victory, with General Andre of the Spanish Foreign Legion the overall winner on points.
Next week will be Koenig Krieg, with 18th Century action in Flanders!
