Lady Killer

Lady Killer

“Psycho Killer

Qu’est-ce que c’est

fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better

Run run run run run run run away”

Dark Horse Comics is facing a possible dark future. One of the company’s biggest chunk of titles where part of the Star Wars license and that ran out late last year. Many wondered what Dark Horse was going to do to take up the slack. Part of the plan seems to be to push other great licenses. Last years Fire and Stone series takes the Aliens, Predator, Prometheus stories to interesting new places. Dark Horse also has some beloved old titles like Hellboy and B.P.R.D. that are still going strong. And they have some bold attempts at new titles. A perfect example of that is Lady Killer.

Sold as “Betty Draper meets Hannibal” Lady Killer is an engaging book that has both strong writing and interesting art. Joëlle Jones and Jamie S. Rich have collaborated before on such books as 12 Reasons Why I Love Her, and You Have Killed Me and both seem to have found a comfortable feel working with each other. Check out this interview by Tyler Chin-Tanner for Broken Frontier.

I was swept up in the action from the first pages of the first issue. Jones does a great job of making the action interesting and dynamic without becoming hard to decipher. We start to learn of the main character Josie Schuller’s complicated double life as a Wife and Mother as well as a Contract Killer set in the Mad Menesque late 50’s suburbia. Her kids are cute. Her husband is loyal. Her job sees her killing house fraus with household appliances and staking out big shots in cocktail lounges all while keeping her family unaware.

Here is an in depth review of the first issue by Andy Khouri on Comics Alliance.

The first issue of Lady Killer has sold out for us here at Source but second printings arrive February 18th. The second issue arrives February 4th.
