I’m glad you asked…
By Lisa

This week, I’m glad CHAD asked what I’ve been yelling about in the office. I like to read early issues I get from publishers on my lunch break and I’ve been doing a lot of responding vocally to the computer about them lately. Two series in particular: REDNECK and EXTREMITY

REDNECK is a new comic out this week from Mr-Can’t-Miss, Donny Cates.  We’re burning through stacks of his most recent comic, GOD COUNTRY, right now, and had plenty of PAYBACKS when he was writing that with local superwriter heartthrob, Eliot Rahal. REDNECK is about a family of vampires living in East Texas and as unexcited as I was about more vampires, I knew Cates would not disappoint. While most stories about misfit neighbors are about trying to fit in, this family wants to be left alone. But long-standing family grudges never lie low for long and there is that saying about how everything’s bigger in Texas. Not only do the story and characters jump right out of the first issue, but each of the next two issues are hugely satisfying reading and leave you jonesing for the next one as soon as you can get it(I could have made a terrible vampire joke there and did not. You’re welcome.).            As has become the standard operating procedure for great new Image series, REDNECK WILL sell out right away. So I’m pretty sure that once the stack we have is gone, they’re gone everywhere until the reprint, which will come out with #2 a month from now. Get your preorders in and avoid worrying about whether you’ll get a copy.

Case in point: EXTREMITY.  #1 arrived and sold out in the same day. The reprint of #1 arrived the following month with #2, and sold out. And I expect #3 to do the same thing because I yelled “are you kidding?” at the screen when I finished reading. I keep expecting the book to trail off into the Mad-Max-Zendikar-Battle montage it seems like it should be. But every issue sucks me into the world of the characters even more. Daniel Warren Johnson lives in a creative world that seems to be his alone. If you’re as strung out waiting for the next new issue of EXTREMITY as I am, pick up his first book, SPACE MULLET.

And I have to throw out an honorable mention for SPENCER AND LOCKE. We sold out of the first issue of the new book from Action Lab this week. It’s an alternate universe Calvin and Hobbes where Calvin has gown up to be a criminal investigator. All of the charm you’d expect is there, just under the thick noir. Thank you

TABLETOP DAY

HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF OUR
FABULOUS GUESTS

Seppy Yoon – Chief Game Designer Fight in a Box
Escaping corporate America in 2014, Seppy’s been charging conventions and living the dream ever since.
Using their first title Squirrel or Die to fund community building, Fight in a Box was able to successfully launch their first kickstarter.  End of the Line – post-apocalyptic family survival delivered three months early on its kickstarter promise.
Between conventions and game nights, Seppy spends his time working on FiaB’s next titles: the Inevitable Machine Revolt and Conquest Princess Pew Pew Pew.
Jeff Tidball
is a game writer, designer, and producer, as well as
the Chief Operating Officer of Atlas Games. He co-wrote (with Will
Hindmarch) Eternal Lies for Trail of Cthulhu, which won an ENnie for
Best Adventure. Other designs include the Origins Award-winning pirate  coin game Pieces of Eight, the Fantasy Flight Games edition of Horus Heresy, and Doctor Who Time Clash. In marginally related nonsense, he published the social mini-game Band or Album with Kenneth Hite. Visit Jeff online at jefftidball.com. On Twitter, he’s @jefftidball.

Jeff will be running…

10:00a – Witches of the Revolution
Play a pre-release version of Atlas Games’s new cooperative deck-builder Witches of the Revolution, where each player’s deck represents a coven of witches, and players must work together to make sure the American Revolution succeeds. Witches of the Revolution comes out in the summer of 2017.
12:00p – Cursed Court
Play a pre-release version of Atlas Games’s new board game where players must wager limited influence, as they make deductions and predictions about which of nine nobles will control the court in the years to come. Cursed Court will come out in the fall of 2017.
2:00p – Doctor Who Time Clash
Play Cubicle 7’s recently released Doctor Who card game with its creator, local game designer Jeff Tidball. Interested players can even try a playtest version of the forthcoming Against the Cybermen expansion.
Brendan Stern

is an Emmy Award winning director who grew up loving art, computers, and games. He pursued his passions and is now creating commercials, 3D characters, web sites, and other interactive media. A large portion of his free time is dedicated to game design podcasts, forums, and blogs.

Adam  Rehberg
is a craft beer loving, dog walking, and nonsense plotting gamer and designer. He founded Adam’s Apple Games looking to turn something he loves into something he can share with others.  Adam’s super power is debating an unclear game rule and forcing the table to read it verbatim from the rulebook testing its interpretation and correctness.  He started designing games just a few years ago thinking that a bottle cap would be a neat board game component.

Games: Brewin’ USA, Truck Off: The Food Truck Frenzy

CURSE WORDS #4

Shieldmaiden Sunday

We see women all of the time around here, but they don’t always see each other. And so, join us for Shieldmaiden Sundays. We’re open 12-6 on Sundays and during that time, if you’re a lady nerd seeking to hang out with other lady nerds to chat comics and cosplay, play casual magic or table top games, or start an RPG campaign, this is your day.

Other events in the game room will proceed as normal, under our every day, general game room guidelines. Our intent is to provide the common time and space for women who have asked about how to find other female members of the community. In the event of a special, large event that occupies the game room for the day it will be on the store calendar and anyone on our staff will be happy to help you reserve space on another night if you wish.
