“Glad You Asked…”
by Lisa

There are Star Wars comics and superhero books out this week. Surprise! Thus continue the resets (?) deluge that’s been interesting hearing everyones’ responses to. The general consensus is “Some Things are Awesome!” and “Some Things are Total Crap!” Some books have been a real breath of fresh air though, and if you haven’t been reading Darth Vader to get in on the mini-event Vader Down, then what are you doing?! It’s extremely rad and so much less problematic than any of the other new canon being dropped on us that I’m sustaining myself on that alone until the release of the next movie.
This week we see the Star Wars Annual #1.

MONSTRESS!    –     Monstress #1 debuted and sold out on the same day last month. You may recognize Marjorie Liu’s name from her work on some Dark Reign books and several very successful YA series. You’ll be recognizing her name more though, as an up and coming creator on this insanely intriguing book with wildly intricate design based in Art Deco. This week, the reprint of #1 is in along with #2. And, since I met Marjorie when she hung out with us at the SDCC Valkyrie Breakfast this summer, she sent us some of the SDCC Monstress buttons. So everyone picking up the second issue this week will be getting a button sent by Marjorie herself!      –

HEAD LOPPER!    –     I’m not a fan of gratuitous violence in anything (exceptions made for Tarantino, Mad Max, etc) so I can’t say I jumped at this book right away. It’s a quarterly, which is a new format for me, and at first glance it looks like a lot of punching and not much else. That was a completely wrong guess on my part. The book is beyond completely delightful. It’s a little like a buddy road trip with shy, legendary Head Lopper, Norgal, and the disembodied head of a witch named Agatha, whom he drop kicks every now and then when she gets too sassy. I loved this so much I actually giggled while reading it. Oh and then there’s also an ongoing dark magic and political intrigue story to keep things chugging along too. It’s just outstanding. This week brings us the continuation of the story in Head Lopper #2.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT     –     I’ve gotten lots of questions about palate cleansing books lately. The capes have been exhausting, and while they still have our undying love, sometimes you need something that’s fun and not necessarily a lifetime commitment to keep things fresh. There are lots of options out there. Tons of different genres and long running series, but for minimal work and maximum enjoyment, consider these:

Ringside #1 came out a couple weeks ago and is all about the, unsurprisingly, unsavory underbelly of pro wrestling. I don’t particularly care about wrestling at all, but I’m completely on board if it means more of this collection of stories about the characters inside and outside the ring.

Cognetic #1 came out a few weeks ago as well, and I’m straight up scolding you for not picking it up. It’s another three issue how-fast-can-we-make-things-fall-apart story from James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan. Same guys who brought us the world destroying meme called The Happy Sloth in Memetic. It’s extremely weird to read a book about the destructive power of The Happy Sloth while also hoping for more instances of The Happy Sloth in the book because it’s funny. But also disturbing? Cognetic is its own beast though and you don’t need any backstory to enjoy.
