Glad you asked…
By Lisa

There are several things out this week that I’m VERY EXCITED about.

Let’s talk first about the two most important things in the world: Pretty Deadly and Mighty Thor.

Up first, you know Kelly Sue DeConnick from her massively successful Dumbledore’s Feminist Army rally cry that is Bitch Planet, and from her revitalization of Captain Marvel and the Carol Corp. And you may remember the first run of Pretty Deadly from ages ago. If you’re new to the series, it was like a western, meets the myth of Persephone (sort of), with a lot of revenge and even more phenomenal art. And it’s set during World War I. I have been at full excitement over this for months. It promises to be the spectacular collision of art and writing and weird, wonderfulness that makes you jump out of bed on Wednesday morning to yell “COMICS!” It’s also going to have a Very Important B cover: originally this was supposed to be the first ever Valkyrie (do you seriously still not know what the Valkyries are? Ok – bewarethevalkyries.com) variant cover, exclusive to Valkyrie shops, of which which we are one. But because the comic industry evolves quickly Image no longer does shop exclusive variants. The incredible series artist, Melanie Rios, had already completely an amazing cover, though (an opposite/mirror image of the regular cover), so it will exist as a normal B cover, but with extra content in the back about and by Valkyries on why what we think women in comics and seeking representation for everyone else as well is so important.

Mighty Thor #1: if I need to tell you why this is super rad you are probably suffering from a hammer related head injury at some point in your life. Jason Aaron is writing a tremendous new Thor, which was tragically cut short by the forced hiatus known as “Secret Wars.” Way back in the distant past of before Secret Wars, Nick Fury whispered something to Thor on the Moon that made him drop his hammer and become no longer worthy to pick it up. He’s slowly gotten used to the fact that he is now just Odinson and that there’s a new Thor in town. And that she’s a lady and she’s kicking all kinds of frost giant parts all over the place and does not need his helicopter parenting to be awesome. Odin is not happy about anything and his wife, Freya, is loving that he’s upset because everyone is fed up with his crap anyway. The “new Thor” or, as she will be known henceforth, “Thor,” doesn’t have time for all of this BS because she has her own list of problems to deal with.

On a completely different page now, JUGHEAD! Archie comics are sacred tradition in this medium. I wanted so, so badly for their reboot to be good and I can not believe how great of a job they did with it. It’s completely G-rated and kid friendly, but completely modern and more readily relatable now. Jughead #1 was an amazing, laugh out loud, warm, delightful surprise. Although how could a comic written by this year’s Harvey Award for Comedy winner Chip Zdarsky and the irrepressible Erica Henderson, artist on The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, be anything other than fantastic?

You may have noticed the endcap with the giant goat and all of the Valiant books in the store. Look upon it next time in wonder and admiration because that sucker won a national competition for Valiant endcaps! Your very own Source Comics and Games will be featured in a full page ad in an upcoming Valiant comic. We will absolutely keep you informed. More importantly, the Valiant Universe. I’ve written some about it and I’ll give you a full lesson soon. Suffice it to say, they’ve got a bunch of movies in the pipeline that will be the first ever hero franchise to challenge Marvel and DC in the movie theaters and I’m crossing my fingers they’re going to kill it. Matt Kindt and Jeff Lemire have been working very closely with Valiant on a comprehensive re-launch of their universe. They’re making sure the whole endeavor has narrative and visual cohesiveness which is an amazing breath of fresh air. Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #1 is out this week and whether you’re new to Valiant or a long time fan it’s pretty cool. These books are taking their time and telling epic stories for grown ups who don’t appreciate being suckered into massive crossover events every four months. There’s a lot of really exciting stuff we’re going to be sharing with them in the near future so hop on the Valiant  Train now with the cool kids. And I’m not going to just tell you what the deal with that goat is – you have to read Quantum & Woody to find out.
