JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS OUTRAGEOUS ANNUAL #1
What’s cool this week, Lisa?
I’M GLAD YOU ASKED
If you go way back with The Walking Dead or Invincible, you’ll recognizethe name Sina Grace from the letter columns and and his post as editor foryears on both of them. Sina started out at Top Cow, moseyed over to Image(where he’s recently done the art for Li’l Depressed Boy, Burn theOrphanage and Penny Dora), and has now embarked on his own projects fulltime.
The first of those projects to come to fruition is out this week andentitled “Self Obsessed.” It’s a collection of strips, pieces and essaysthat lays out his evolution as an artist, and, consequently, a human. It’sa much more interesting answer to the question “how did you become a comicbook professional?” than you normally get. Yet again, I get to sing thepraises of another low priced, high quality non-fiction on the comic rack.Comics is such a huge umbrella for so many different kinds of work, and itmakes us nothing but happy to have as many different kinds of that work onthe shelf as possible. And it’s probably the only comic tpb this year thatcomes with an audiobook. Due to the fact that Sina is an incredibly niceguy and very generous with his time, he answered a few questions for meabout the book.
This is a comic that comes with an audio book. What doesthat mean and how did it happen? – The audiobook is sort of a silly add-onthat I did on a self-serving level. It’s so hard to come up with original ways to market comics, and I thought “wouldn’t it be funny if I said therewas an audiobook to a COMIC?” So the whole thing is me just reading the
dialog while describing what goes on in the panels. It should be utterly
ridiculous! My friend Sarah Morisano has an awesome podcast (CRUSHED!) andall that equipment, so we just grabbed dinner and then recorded the wholething in one night. Very professional. –
The audio component is a verycool idea, especially in light of how much work you’ve done with musicians(like Jenny Lewis and the LDB concert variants) and how much music you’veincorporated into ongoing comics like Li’l Depressed Boy. What aboutcomics and music makes them so tied together for you? – I’ve been thinking
a lot about the relationship between comics and music… and I feel like
they both have the same strengths and similar setbacks. They both involveartists trying to convey a point, but not necessarily having the fullwheelhouse at their disposal. Most musicians can’t create a music videofor each song, so it’s up to them to create an emotion with just musicFor comic artists, we get words and images, but we don’t have the luxuryof motion or audio. How each cartoonist or musician works with their toolsto get the point across is what makes for unique and beautiful art. –
Howdo you feel about the whole process of this book now that it’s done? Doyou think you’ll do more autobiographical work? – Making Self-Obsessed wasso stressful. Not in the same way that making Not My Bag or Burn theOrphanage or any of the freelance stuff was, but in that I had to questionwhy every single effing strip was put in the book. This is the first timeI’ve been completely 100% myself, and it’s frightening to tell the worldwhat’s on your mind and risk the judgment and ridicule that comes withit. The funny thing is, now that it’s done, I’m kind of like “Okay, wellthe worst is out there. Let’s now focus on doing it better!” So yeah, I’dlove to play more with autobio stuff! –
What’s up next for you? – I’vegot a ninja turtles story for IDW that I’m writing and drawing that shouldbe out in the November issue of their cartoon-related comic. So much fun!
What a blast. I grew up on those dudes. There’s always some really greatstuff on the horizon that I’m not allowed to talk about. And of course: more autobio strips 🙂 –
What comics are you reading now and what are you looking forward to? – I just picked up Headlopper. Love it. Been picking up anything Jeff Lemire does. I haven’t grabbed Riley and Ming’s Constantine but that will be on my list once I start touring. I’m gonna be doing a lot of catch-up on tour! Comic shops across the nation, you better have all them indie books I’ve been writing down on the corners of my art boards!!!
